WHAT IS SYSTEMS
ENGINEERING?
Systems Engineering is concerned with the
design, production, and maintenance of reliable systems within cost and time
constraints. Systems engineers apply an appropriate combination of theories
and tools, carried out through the use of a

suitable methodology and a
set of system management procedures, to address
real world problems that are often of large scale and scope. Systems
engineering activities vary from requirements definition or specification to
the conceptual and functional development of systems.
The systems engineering program provides the students with the basic
concepts, tools and methods useful in dealing with complex systems which can
be considered as a single unit with regard to functions and tasks. A complex
system generally includes components of various types, such as:
technological, human, biological, environmental, industrial, social,
political and economic. Systems engineering programs study the problems
related to modeling, decision making, control and optimization of such
systems, it also considers the relationship and interactions among various
components of the system. The computer plays a central role not only for
engineering and mathematical computations but also for simulation, automatic
control and other information processing and automating tasks.
The undergraduate systems engineering program offers a broad technical
background, with courses in the first two years that provide the necessary
foundation in the basic subjects upon which advanced engineering studies
depend. The following two years of work provide the professional-level
material, including computer applications necessary for the
interdisciplinary engineering activities that are required of the modern
systems engineers. In the senior year, a senior design project that will
cover a wide range of realistic problems in industrial, governmental and
service systems applications will allow all students to draw on their
creativity, imagination, and motivation, as well as their engineering
education. Emphasis in the department curriculum is on the practical
applications of the theories on operations research, information systems,
decision support systems, digital systems, communication systems,
manufacturing and management systems.
Yeditepe University Systems Engineering Department offers two options;
Industrial Engineering and Automation and Control Engineering.
